A Little Extra Surprise in Nagatoro: Sweet Touches That Made My Trip

Over the weekend, I took a short overnight trip with my mom to Nagatoro, a charming spot in Saitama.
To be honest, almost everything shuts down by 5 p.m., and the station bathroom made me think, “Am I really in Japan right now?” — it was that shocking! 😂
But despite that, I discovered so many little moments that made the trip feel extra special.

One of our first stops was a riverside restaurant called Miharashi.
The interior was spacious, airy, and beautifully traditional, with table seating (no kneeling — thank goodness!). And the view of the river from our seats was absolutely breathtaking. A total win for both comfort and scenery! 🏞️

I ordered their famous shaved ice, where you get to choose how much syrup to have poured on top — such a fun and personalized touch! 🍧
We also tried their salt-grilled sweetfish (ayu), which came with a special dipping sauce called tadezu, traditionally used to mask the fishy smell. A little cultural history served with lunch — I loved that!
My ayu was filled with roe like a shishamo, which felt like hitting the jackpot. My mom’s fish didn’t have eggs, but it had more meat, so we were both happy 😊

A traditional Japanese lunch set with grilled salt-cured ayu (sweetfish), zaru soba noodles, and mountain vegetable sides, served at Miharashi restaurant in Nagatoro.
This seasonal lunch set at Miharashi features perfectly grilled ayu, chilled soba noodles, and wild vegetable sides — a refreshing taste of summer in the heart of Nagatoro.

Oh, and don’t get me started on the Chichibu melon soda we had there.
Made with pure local water, it was lightly sweet and totally refreshing — the perfect summer treat! 🍈💧

Later, we visited a gelato shop where the customer service absolutely melted my heart.
The server had already peeled open the handle side of the spoon wrapper and held the opposite end, saying, “Just pull this side!” After I took the spoon, they smoothly collected the wrapper. No trash for me to carry around, and such thoughtful hospitality! 💕

At Asami Reizo, a famous shaved ice shop in Nagatoro, I ordered condensed milk syrup — but to my surprise, it came with a pickled plum!
I’m not a fan, so I gave it to my mom, but she smiled and said, “The ice cools you down, and the plum helps replenish salt — perfect for summer.”
We had been waiting about 30 minutes outside in the hot sun, so that little thoughtful touch really hit the spot 🌞

Nagatoro might have its quirks, but it offers those ‘little extras’ that leave a lasting impression.
It turned out to be a perfect spot for a mini girls’ getaway, full of unexpected delights 💕
