Every year, picking out a Mother’s Day gift kind of stresses me out.
In Japan, it falls on the second Sunday of May, which means this year it was May 11th.
Flowers? Sweets? A cute outing together? I thought about all of them, but this time I wanted something a little more… special.

So I treated myself—er, us—to a fancy ¥800 (about $5) chocolate from Dubai.

(Fun fact: While the name might make you think it’s from Dubai, this “Dubai chocolate” is actually made in Japan!)
(Okay, I mostly just wanted to try it. Guilty.)

I handed one tiny square to my mom with the excuse,
“Let’s share this for Mother’s Day, as a special treat!”

The whole piece was much smaller than I imagined—about 29g and 4.5cm x 4.5cm x 1.4cm.
Inside, it contained kadaif, a shredded pastry made from wheat flour.
I knew it’d be small from the box size, but slicing it in half and holding my share made my hands tremble.

“Wait… this little thing is like 400 yen?!”
“That’s enough to buy a decent-sized sandwich or even some hot food at a Japanese convenience store.”
Still, with everyone talking about it online, not having tried it felt… culturally risky.
What if someone goes, “That chocolate was crazy, huh?” and I’ve got nothing to say?

So, one bite in—and WHOA.

It was… crunchy.
Like, really crunchy. Non-stop crunchy.

「それでも高いわよ。もっと安く買える店あるから今度買ってきましょう。」
